this was drawn entirely in public over a few days. i finished inking it while watching Battle Royal. wicked flick.

i realise now that i did not say i was [obviously] inspired by a scene in the animatrix. my bad. that explains why i am still getting, "hey isn't that..." every other comment. google "the horseman from animatrix" it probably has a fansite.

The Rider

Here comes the gaunt rider,
Tall and faceless,
Atop his mount
Of gears and bones,
A mesh of oil and caked blood
Covering the discordant noises
Of the beast’s pace.

The crimson sky oversees
The black rider as he moves about
on grass that is no longer green,
on ground that is no longer brown,
For the lifeless bodies
-whole or not-
Littering the field
Force the spectrum of colors
To restrict its display.

The rider has no emotion,
No response is shown
To the still chaos
Surrounding him.
The tattered flag he carries
Does not wave,
A flag from no land.
His flayed skin is exposed
Through the holes
Of his well-worn armor,
Pieces of his ragged tabard
Barely covering old wounds.
His coat-of-arms is faded,
His cracked shield
Hangs loosely on the right flank
Of his mount,
Clanging with each
Irregular step,
Like war drums
Summoning fallen warriors
To fields in heaven or hell.

Crows and vultures descend.
Flies now circle the dead.
Time resumes its course.
The rider leaves,
A ghostly aura
Disappearing in the fog,
Probably headed
For other killing grounds.
